rest in peace

I have been missing in action for the last couple of months and this is because, after a very short and serious illness, my beautiful and loving father passed away. His absence has left a gaping hole in all of our lives but his warmth, generosity, humour and kindness live on in all of our wonderful memories of him. I received my first camera for my 21st birthday and, having displayed a passionate interest for photography, Dad gave me his film SLR not long after as means of encouragement. 

Dad, I miss you, I love you and you are always always in my thoughts.

Today I really miss my fantastic Oscar. After 17 wonderful years, we sadly lost our lovely cat two weeks ago. He is, and always will be, sorely missed.

geometry

Although lines and geometry are very important in composition, I'm not generally someone who gets butterflies seeing clean lines of buildings. I was proved wrong when I saw this building in Henrietta Place in the blazing London sunshine. Look at those lines! Look at those shadows! I love the austere concrete against the clear blue backdrop of the sky. Just goes to show, thinking you know what you like can sometimes close you off to a whole wonder of other beautiful things.

bright lights, big city

I've recently been looking at neon lighting in my personal work. In all busy metropolises such as London, the neon light is used to attract attention, communicate a message and invite you in. They are used to advertise a commodity when the sun's gone down. They signify 'open' when everything else is closed. Food, music, sex....anything that you want after dark, the neon light will help you to find it. Not only am I interested in the concept itself but in the sense of movement that surrounds these lights. There are of course some places where the neon light is accompanied with the hustle and bustle of the city. But I'm more interested in the silence - the calm out on the street when everyone's going to bed and there are only a few people still out on the street. A time when the streets are sleeping yet these places, and their neon lights flicker on through the night.

happy new year

As the festive season draws to a close and we begin dragging ourselves out of bed on these cold dark mornings to start the new year, I've been reflecting on the past two weeks. The Christmas break has been filled with mince pies, turkey, chocolate, cider, crackers, pigs in blankets, presents, decorations, friends, family and the most welcome break in the history of man. Happy new year!

Still life experiment looking at dramatic lighting techniques to enhance texture using one light set-up. I think fir cones are quite characteristic anyway so they were actually quite fun to shoot. Easy to direct as well!
